Ruatoria Community Health Centre

Is the largest Health Centre on the Coast, serving Ruatoria and its many contributing small settlements, as of the 2006 census, it was the third largest centre of population on the East Coast 94.8% of the population was Maori.

The Health Centre provides a 5 day a week service with Doctors on a shared roster (Drs Helen Gardyne, Akin Ojo and locums) supported by a practice nurse, (Daisy Reedy and Cynthia Colbert) with one nurse only day. This is a team of qualified medical practitioners who respond to all patient needs.

Kaiawhina/ Community Health Worker Services

  • Facilitates access for whanau to health services
  • Smooth transition for whanau through the health and related services
  • Advocating and supporting whanau in the health services
  • Facilitating multidisciplinary approach
  • Educating and informing Maori about the health services, health issues and general health matters concerning whanau.
  • Providing links and consultation between whanau the community and service agencies
  • Quit smoking assistance

Whanau Ora Navigator/ Systems Innovator

  • Works with a maximum of 20 whanau in Ruatoria
  • Helps whanau to develop plans to improve health outcomes
  • Focus on whanau aspirations
  • Whanau creating positive change for themselves

Clerical Support

Joan Johnson is the receptionist, supported by a relieving receptionist Phillapa Bowden, they are responsible for making all appointments and responding to patient enquires and referring them to the appropriate service.

  • Enroll all patients
  • Process invoices and payments
  • Administer the Travel assistance fund which is available for some specialist visits at Te Puia or Gisborne Hospitals. (Criteria applies)
  • Provides information on complaints procedure
  • Customer satisfaction surveys
